KSM - November 14, 2008
Tommy: Hey it’s Tommy2 and today we have KSM with us backstage at the Gymnastics Superstars Tour. First off how you guys doin?
Everone: Great, really good today.
Tommy: Now first off before we get started why don’t we have everyone introduce themselves and you can say how old you are and what you do in the band.
Shelby: Well I am Shelby and I’m 15 years old and I am lead vocals.
Katie: I’m Katie, I’m 15 years old as well and I’m rhythm guitar.
Sophia: I’m Sophia, I’m 17 years old and I play bass.
Kate: I’m Kate, I’m 17 and I play drums.
Shae: I’m Shae, I’m 18 and I play lead guitar.
Tommy: Now you’ve got a song, Hero In You on the new Disney Girlz Rock 2 CD. How’d you guys get connected with Walt Disney Records for that?
Shae: I guess I’ll answer this one. Well two years ago Disney and The GoGo’s kinda had this idea for an all girl band, so the four of us right here were brought together for that original all girl band. So they were already with us and then we got Shelby in February so now we’re in KSM with Walt Disney still backing us. So it’s great.
Tommy: Why don’t you tell us about the name KSM?
Sophia: Well, all of our initials start with K and S and then the M is for Music which is something that ties us all together.
Tommy: And you’ve been together two years now you said.
Sophia: Yes.
Tommy: You said that started with The GoGo’s, were they involved in selecting you guys?
Shae: Yes, they were. They were there for the auditions and we did like a short recording session with them to so they kind of helped us out getting used to the studio a little bit. And they helped us with advice and stuff.
Tommy: Because of that do you guys do any GoGo's covers?
Shae: We used to do quite a few GoGo’s covers actually. We don’t do anything now I don’t think, but they were fun to do when we were playing those covers.
Katie: It was fun to do We Got The Beat, that was my favorite.
Tommy: And aside from The GoGo’s what are your musical influences?
Shelby: Well as a band we’re really influenced by Paramore, No Doubt and Pink and like a lot of other popular female artists like from the past and present. But individually like are influences vary, like mine is Cyndi Lauper and like Kate’s is Travis Barker and so we all vary individually but as a whole we look to a lot of strong female artists.
Tommy: And now since you guys have been on the Gymnastics Tour, have you had a chance to see that when you’re not performing at all?
Shelby: Yeah, watching the gymnastics is a lot of fun, it’s kinda crazy they actually perform while we’re playing are music so we get to be on stage and watch them perform around us. So it’s crazy, it’s like a circus that’s taking place around you while
Tommy: Is that every distracting when you’re like oh wait – watch out!
Shelby: Sometimes I’m like somebody will fall and I’m like ooohhh my – oh distracted! But yeah , it’s cool.
Tommy: What songs do you guys play during your set?
Kate: We play, we start of the show with Hero and they we do Just A Girl which is our No Doubt cover while they do a bar routine, it’s really awesome. And then we usually have a three song set at intermission and we do three originals which are Distracted, Read Between The Lines and then we alternate the last one but lately we’ve been playing a song called Don’t Come Crying.
Tommy: Do you think this has been a good opportunity for you guys to get out and establish a fan base and get to know your audience at all?
Shelby: Yeah definitely cause as well as the Gymnastics Tour we’re also on a dual tour. Like we’re doing a school show tour at the same time. So we go to High Schools and Middle Schools in the cities that we’re in and we are tied in with an organization called Inconvenient Youth which is to raise awareness about the Global Warming situation that’s going down right now in our world on our planet. So we get to perform for the Gymnastics audience who are really there for the gymnasts and we get to support the gymnasts in that way and then we have our own little tour going on where we get to hang out with a bunch of kids that are our age and younger and it’s a lot of fun. So we’re, I think we are building a pretty good fan base under us.
Tommy: Sounds like a lot of work, you guys get really tired from that. It sounds like a long day when you’re doing two shows.
Shelby: It’s tiring but it’s so much fun. So
Katie: I think the traveling is what gets us the most. But it’s, I think the pros outweigh the cons. So we deal with it, we stick it out.
Kate: It’s worth it to like play to all these kids and really get out and see the United States and be just part of this great opportunity, it’s awesome.
Tommy: When you’re not performing and you’re not sleeping, what type of things do you guys to have fun on the road?
Shelby: We go get sushi.
Katie: We get sushi quite often, we eat Subway too! We eat a lot.
Shelby: We go bowling with the gymnast.
Katie: We have little, like on our tour bus we have little parties in the back where we just hang out and blow up balloons and throw them at each other. And just draw pictures, I don’t know we have fun though.
Shelby: Yeah, last night we actually have… if you would look at our back lounge now on tour bus now there are tons of balloons in right now cause we are party animals. I’m just kidding, no we were having a good time though. Signing flyers, we sign…
Kate: We do school.
Shelby: We do school work.
Shae: Blast our iPod in the back lounge. All the parents are like turn that down.
Tommy: So that’d be a hint for the super fans of KSM, if you want to get in good you bring like special balloons.
All: (laughter)
Tommy: Well thanks a lot for your time, before we go though I want you guys to get a chance how people can find out about you online. Do you want to plug a myspace ad web address or…
