Billboard 21 Under 21 exposed, Tonight Alive on the cover of Kerrang!, Ariana Grande and Big Time Rush WWDOP performances at Nick.com, Bean now on SiriusXM’s 20 on 20, Hayley Kiyoko in The Vampire Diaries, Target launches Target Ticket, Gravity Falls: Six Strange Tales coming to DVD

September 26th, 2013

Billboard has released their annual 21 Artist Under 21: Music’s Hottest Minors list for 2013. This year it’s a clear example that it’s just another ‘chart’ to drive online traffic and proves there is actually no substance to it at all. Seriously, Billboard ignores teen music for 51 weeks of the year, and then for one week they become the anointed ones blessing the next big thing?

Let’s take a close look at how Billboard defines this list:

From bubbly boy bands (and a cool girl group) to hip-hop powerhouses, a sweet K-Pop princess to a rising EDM star, and of course, international pop icons, these are the fresh faces whose careers will continue to pack the biggest punches over the next 12 months. Get used to them all, because they’re just getting started.

If that’s the case then how on earth did Ariana Grande miss the list last year? Yes, fans are still rejoicing that she’s listed at #4, but let’s look at the facts. For my case I’ll use a line straight from their copy – “pack the biggest punches over the next 12 months.” Ariana’s debut single The Way debuted on Top 40 Radio just six months after being snubbed by Billboard’s list last September (T2 9/19/2012). The Way went on to sell over 219,000 units in it’s first week – a feat that hasn’t been matched by a new artist in 2013. Then in the final weeks of that 12 month window where Billboard ignored Ariana, she packed the biggest punch with her debut album, Yours Truly, going to straight #1. According to Billboard, she’s one of only 15 solo female artists whose debut albums have opened at No. 1. Let’s be honest, she’s one of the hottest new artists of the last year and they never saw it coming.

So here that infamous list of 21 Artists Under 21 that will look nice framed under glass if your name is on it, but that’s about it.

1. One Direction
2. Justin Bieber
3. Miley Cyrus
4. Ariana Grande
5. Earl Sweatshirt
6. Lorde
7. Austin Mahone
8. Scotty McCreery
9. Cody Simpson

15. Joey Bad…
16. Tori Kelly
17. Martin Garrix
18. Mindless Behavior
19. Matty B.
20. Lee hi
21. Fifth Harmony
