Tommy2: How’s it going, it’s Tommy2 and joining us today we’ve got Savannah Jayde from “Big Time Rush” and she’s hear to talk with us about the film “Space Warriors” that opens in theaters this Friday. Savannah how are you doing this morning?
Savannah Jayde: I’m doing good, how are you?
Tommy2: I am doing amazing!
Savannah Jayde: Good.
Tommy2: Now let’s start here with your new film, “Space Warriors.” Why don’t you give us the details on the story and how you fit into it?
Savannah Jayde: Okay, well “Space Warriors” is about a group of six kids who are all chosen to attend this really prestigious camp where we all compete against other teams in hopes of winning the challenges and end up with a trip to space. They kind of pick us from all over the world and put us together on this team and we just have to be a team instantly, which of course that doesn’t happen because we’re teenagers and there’s rivalry between some of the boys and the competitions really tough. We compete against this one team who’s won every year and they’re older than us an obviously way more experienced and work as a well oiled machine and of course we do not. We take a little bit longer to kind of learn each others strengths and weaknesses and work together. But, in the end we all figure out how to work together as a team and help each other out with what we can do and with what they can’t do and we end up saving the day.
Tommy2: So kind of like a teamwork film?
Savannah Jayde: Yeah, definitely. I think the biggest lesson is work together with your team and don’t cut each other down because of something they can’t do and you can and what not.
Tommy2: As far as your character, are you one of the good ones or the bad ones?
Savannah Jayde: I am one of the good ones. Dani is part of the “Space Warriors,” there’s six of us and Dani’s kind of the Tomboy, the cool girl of the group. She’s bossy and she’s a force to be reckoned with I would definitely say. She comes in very strong, but ends up learning that she has to temper herself down because she’s part of the team and she’s a really cool girl. I think the coolest thing about her is that she doesn’t really depend on clothes or looks or anything. She was chosen to attend space camp because she’s the best at what she does, which is robotics and she’s very proud of that. So I think that’s a cool thing for teenage girls to see in a movie
Tommy2: And speaking of the wardrobe there, There’s not a lot to do with it since you were pretty much in a jumpsuit right?
Savannah Jayde: Yeah, we were. There’s a few scenes where we were kind of hanging out afterwards, but for the most part we spent a lot of time in our Space Warrior jumpsuits or our Space Warrior camp t-shirts because that was like our uniform for all of the challenges. Which is interesting because we got to… we were filming while Space Camp was actually going on so we saw all the kids running around in their little aviation outfits or their Space Warriors uniforms and their t-shirts and everything, so it was really cool to be a part of the Space Camp.
Tommy2: Okay, now tell us about the cast, you had the chance to work with some really big names and some new up-and-comers.
Savannah Jayde: Yeah, it was a great cast, I think we all worked really well together. Working with Dermot Mulroney was really cool. I really, I think, I mean I’ve watched so many things that he’s been in, so I think that it was really awesome to work with him. Danny Glover, obviously he is such a legend. I had a scene with him, it was the last scene of the night and it was just so cool to work with him and hear about stories that he’s, you know… sets he’s worked on. Obviously, Josh Lucas and… I mean everyone, it was great.
Tommy2: How much different was it working on a film versus a TV series?
Savannah Jayde: It’s a lot different I think. A movie, you’re there for a month or a little bit longer. You know you’ve got a certain amount of time and you’re on location most of the time and you’re just really in your zone. I think with the TV show it’s a lot lighter, you’ve got… you’re filming for a week, you’ve got a couple days off, you break for lunch and you hang out on set and whatever. And I feel like we do more takes with the TV show than I did with the movie but maybe that’s just “Big Time Rush” cause we like to have fun with it.
Tommy2: For this movie you actually did get to do all the Space Camp training, what was your favorite activity?
Savannah Jayde: Oh that’s a tough one, we did everything from zip lining to a helo dunker, which is this big huge helicopter that literally gets dunked into the lake and you have to get your team out safely. And we scuba dived, because that’s how you learn to be in zero gravity. I think the scuba diving was probably my favorite cause it was something I’ve never done before and it was kind of scary because if you mess up it could be really bad, so you really had to focus and like actually learn what you’re doing. So I think that was really cool.
Tommy2: And that’s something you can use in the future. I remember last time we spoke you said you wanted to… when it came to traveling, you wanted to go to exotic locations and scuba diving could definitely come in good there.
Savannah Jayde: I agree, you know I’ve got my first training under my belt. I think I could handle it if someone else asked me to go scuba diving with them.
Tommy2: And getting back to the activities, how about the Centrifuge, how did you fair with that?
Savannah Jayde: Oh man, well… that was a little scary. I don’t do really well with roller coasters and being queasy and things like that, so I was really nervous about that. But it ended up being fine, but you know you have your instructions. If you lean forward to much you’re going to feel sick, if you keep still like you’re good, so, I think we all really paid attention on those instructions. Whereas the other ones you just kind of get in the water and you go for it.
Tommy2: And since working on the film has your interest in space and the space program changed since the film?
Savannah Jayde: Totally, I think everyone at some point in there life dreams about going to Space Camp. I mean that just seems like the coolest thing in the world. So, the fact that I got to go and experience it all just for a movie especially was incredible. And I’ve always loved space and you know the planets and stars so I think it was really, really, really exciting to be at the Space Camp and everything we did was 100 percent accurate and we had people from NASA making sure we were 100 percent on point with all of the facts that we said, so we actually learned a lot.
Tommy2: And for people that don’t make it out to the theaters to see “Space Warriors” I hear that it’s going to have a TV premiere as well. Can you tell us about that?
Savannah Jayde: Yes, it’s going to be in limited theaters for a little bit so if obviously it’s not going to be in your area you can see it on the Hallmark Channel and also it’s going to be released on DVD on May 31st.
Tommy2: Now I hear that tonight you’re heading to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama and the premiere for “Space Warriors” is tomorrow. Are you looking forward to reuniting with the cast?
Savannah Jayde: I can’t wait! A lot of use are going to be there, a few of us are off doing other things so they weren’t able to come in, but we are going to have most of the cast come in town for this and it’s the first time we’re all going to see it all together. I just saw the music scores for it a couple minutes ago and I tweeted that link and it’s just so exciting to see it all coming together and we had so much CGI so to see that in real life rather than looking at nothing is going to be really cool.
Tommy2: It sounds like it’s going to be a pretty amazing event with a private reception and all as well.
Savannah Jayde: I know, I’m excited and just to be back at Space Camp and walk around and kind of relive it all should be really cool.
Tommy2: So are you all packed and ready to go?
Savannah Jayde: I am not packed… at all. I actually have to pick up my little brother from school, he’s going to come with me so we have to pick him up and pack for him and then leave… rush to the airport. So… I’m a last minute packer
Tommy2: I’ll bet your little brother is going to love that.
Savannah Jayde: He’s very excited. He gets to experience it all first hand and I hope we can take him around and let him see some of the cool stuff.
Tommy2: You’re always one on top of fashion, what can we expect to see you wearing on the red carpet?
Savannah Jayde: I’m going to wear something that’s a little space inspired, it’s kind of a jumpsuit but a little more fashionable than the one I wore as Dani.
Tommy2: In less than two weeks, “Big Time Rush,” will kick off Season 4 with a new episode titled Big Time Invasion. What are we in store for with the new season?
Savannah Jayde: I mean, we had a shorter season this last one just cause we put a lot of hijinks into a really short season. So I think definitely, a lot of crazy things are happening. I know we’re filming the last episode of the season right now and there’s crazy things, crazy things happening. It’s going to be an hour long special so I know Season 4 is not going to disappoint.
Tommy2: And, I just pulled some stats on “Big Time Rush” that I wanted to share. Currently each episode is averaging just under 4 million views, and it can be seen in 78 territories and 17 languages. How much have you enjoyed the opportunity to be on the show?
Savannah Jayde: Honestly, it’s been one of the greatest experiences of my life. The cast is incredible, I’ve never worked with a cast that’s so family oriented, we all have become such a unit and I mean it’s been going on for four years, we’ve obviously become so close and just the fact that the show has blown up that much is astounding to me. I mean, I remember doing the first season just thinking well, we hope the band does well and we hope everything works out. And here we are four years later with that, 4 million people watching each episode, like that’s… oh man, I’m so thankful to be a part of that.
Tommy2: And you also made it to Season 4, where with most shows it goes to 3 and that’s the end.
Savannah Jayde: I know, we just have the best fans in the world. They’re so dedicated to us and to the band and they’re just so loyal and we just couldn’t be happier.
Tommy2: Alright, before we finish up here I just want to remind everyone that Space Warriors opens in theaters this Friday, April 26th and for details on the film and where you can see it – fans should head over to SpaceCamp.com and look for the banners. Savannah thanks so much for checking in with us again.
Savannah Jayde: Thank you so much.
