Interview: Superchic[k] – Matt Dally

Tommy2: Hey, it’s Tommy2 and today I’m joined by Matt of Superchick at the Capitol Theatre. How you doing?

Matt Dally: Fantastic, it’s beautiful here, it’s a beautiful day.

Tommy2: So how’s this tour been going?

Matt Dally: Perfect man, we’ve only had two dates but every day we’re doing is great. I mean it’s fun when you are actually working with people you actually enjoy working with, you know this tours gonna be a blast, it’s gonna be cake.

Tommy2: And Recently you finished up you Cross The Line video, what you’d think of the end result?

Matt Dally: It was amazing I mean it’s one of those things where a lot of people don’t know be we did literally every inch of it ourselves and it’s something we’ve always done with our records, and then we started with our photo shoots and now finally the last form of media was video and we…it took awhile, but after awhile it looks awesome I can’t… just all the work that went into we did a lot of wire work, a lot of training a lot of, it wasn’t just a typical video, set up a room and go for it there was months and months of prep for this.

Tommy2: Yeah and you also have some really high end compositing that turned out really good.

Matt Dally: Doesn’t it look good? I’m just… literally frame by frame wires had to edited. It was a lot of work, but it’s proof that you guys can do it like and that’s what we’ve always done, we just want to let everyone know that you don’t need a big record budget, you don’t need all these people, you just need drive to go out there and do it, not be afraid.

Tommy2: I want to know was that scary, cause actually some of those stunts looks like they could’ve been dangerous there.

Matt Dally: I mean it was a little scary because we literally kind of made our own rig, I mean we researched it quite a bit, but yeah it was funny cause we didn’t have enough time when we were shooting but here were a there were a few scenes where I was going to be backflipping off the big stack wall on to the drum riser and so we were starting with a table and being able to do a backflip and land on a chair. And it was, once you get the rhythm down it was as hard but that was a little nerve wracking yes for sure and luckily that scene didn’t make it because that would’ve maybe taken days to get it done and possibly some injuries.

Tommy2: And which one of you guys was the guinea pig for the rig?

Matt Dally: Actually it was me, me and Dave were the two were there every day making it happen and Dave was the first to go up with it but the flips and stuff was me. I was the first to not afraid to flip with a guitar.

Tommy2: So obviously you two are the thrill seekers.

Matt Dally: Exactly, well… yeah or were just the only one… yeah Thrill seeker or just dumb enough to do it. I don’t know if we even though about it. It was like it had to be done so we just did it.

Tommy2: One thing that always strikes me is how relevant your lyrics are. Even though you’re not the same ages you when the group started 10 years ago, your still insanely on topic with todays teens. What type of things do you take into mind while songwriting.

Matt Dally: Just our audience, I mean the people we come in contact with at our shows. I think so many times bands write for themselves and I think we do a little bit too and we do tell personal stories about us as well but if it wasn’t for the kids talking to us after the shows and just being able to relate with our fans on a personal level after every single event, and every concert we wouldn’t have material to write, and that’s why we do what we do. That’s why we hang out afterwards and that’s why we stay in touch with our fans is because we love them and without them we wouldn’t be able to write the songs we do.

Tommy2: So definitely that’s it. You guys have your street cred cause you’re always hanging out with your audience.

Matt Dally: Exactly, and that’s something we take pride in. You know what I’m saying. Sometimes it’s hard I mean there’s time when it’s you have a 3am flight tonight and you have to, there’s times when you can’t but pry 95 percent of the shows we are out there and we are just hanging out there as much as we can. That’s why we do what we do.

Tommy2: Now just a couple of months ago, I could help but notice a tweet from Demi Lovato that was just a status that read – Superchick – Courage. Is that inspiring to see that your music being present in the lives of some of the bigger influencers on teens today.

Matt Dally: Yeah, it’s funny how that works out. It’s like flattering, but it’s good to that we are able to make music not only for, ya know normal people too but I guess you call it celebrities will enjoy it as well. It’s kinda funny, it’s fun but yet we’re just trying to make an impact to anybody no matter what status you are and it’s great that people even in the upper echelon if you will are being impacted by our music, it’s an honor and we’re just glad that God is using it to make that happen.

Tommy2: For people not familiar with that song, could you explain what it’s about?

Matt Dally: Ah, courage is about an eating disorder that Melissa had in our band and it just talks about the daily struggle of feeling beautiful and you know it’s tough, it’s something that so many people deal with I think everybody wants to look better, everybody is maybe not satisfied with who they are but I feel that once the eating disorder kicks in that can just over take your life and it’s a constant struggle I think it’s like one of those things where you always have that in you and it’s a matter of figuring out how to overcome it and deal with it every day.

Tommy2: Now after this tour, what’s the future look like for Superchic[k]?

Matt Dally: Man, work on another record umm, everybody’s just excited to write more music and we own our own studio so anytime we have time off we’re always in their writing having fun and it usually takes some time for us to write but I think now more than ever we just make music that we want to do. There’s not much pressure anymore and so we’re just going to go out and write another record, we might do actually do a remix record too, cause we like to do that as well. Like every single time you do a record there’s things you wish you could change a little bit more. So we’ll probably do another remix record with some new songs like, you know our goal is to release about five or six songs a year from now on, just keep on thowing music out there and throwing videos out there cause now we have all the tools to do it, now we just need to keep on doing it.

Tommy2: Well Matt thanks for your time today, I appreciate it and am looking forward to the show.

Matt Dally: Thanks Tommy, appreciate it.
