Interview: Kristinia DeBarge talks about Goodbye and the beginning of her career – May 21, 2009

Tommy2: Things have been moving really fast for you. Like just a little over a month ago I actually got my copy of Goodbye and I couldn’t help but fall in love with it, and like it was the next week that it had some big radio adds like on WKTU, WQKI, Z100 and even Radio Disney picked it up. That had to be a big thrill for you.

Kristinia DeBarge: Oh yeah, absolutely! I mean I was surprised with how well it is doing already and I… like I said am getting tons of phone calls from so many people that are so happy from me. So this is all surreal, I’m still taking it in and I thank God every day that I wake up that I am living my dream.

Tommy2: Could you describe what it was like for you the first time you actually heard Goodbye on the radio and like the emotions and stuff.

Kristinia DeBarge: Umm… haha, my mom actually recorded me on her camera. I’m like jumping up and down screaming like I am three years old wanting some ice cream or some candy from the store. I was just like screaming up and down like I had just met the President of the United States. I was just ecstatic and I couldn’t wait to talk to the producer of the guy that was on the show. I was like ‘oh my God he sounds so excited about Goodbye, like I wanted to show him I was just as excited’. So I was begging everyone to get his number and talk to him and from that point I just started hearing my song on the radio. I would tune into like every station online and whatever station was already playing and I would just start listening and the go ‘oh my God that’s me, that’s me!’ And then when it finally started playing in Los Angeles it was like just super surreal cause it was in my hometown. So I got a lot, even more phone calls from people who live here. So it was really all surreal to me and I’m really excited and I can’t wait for my second single to come out and everyone to react. I hope it does just as good as Goodbye.

Tommy2: Yeah, and it’s still got quite a ways to go. It’s like, virtually every station is playing it and if there not playing it, nobody is listening to them right?

Kristinia DeBarge: Yes, haha!

Tommy2: As far as the future goes, you just shot a music video for Goodbye. Is there anything that you can share with us about that, that we can you know get a hint of?

Kristinia DeBarge: Yes, I can tell you that it’s going to be a really good video. I got to choose the car in my video which is a 1966 Mustang. It’s red and it’s a convertible. Which I’m really proud of and proud to say because I love classic cars. So everyone has to look forward to that, and there’s a, it’s really funny story but I don’t want to give it away because I want people to see the video and you kind of have to figure it out while you’re watching the video but there’s some comedic parts in there and there’s some parts where I’m a little more serious. But, throughout the whole video it’s a very of fun and there’s a lot of energy. It’s gonna be a really, really good video I’m hoping that everyone’s gonna like it.
