Interview: Willow Shields – The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Tommy2: What’s up, it’s Tommy2 and today we’re lucky to have Willow Shields joining us to talk about her character Primrose Everdeen and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in Theaters now. So how are you doing today?

Willow Shields: Good, how about you?

Tommy2: I’m doing great! Now, on Monday night, you walked the red carpet at Nokia Theatre for the Hunger Games: Catching Fire LA Premiere. Was that pretty crazy?

Willow Shields: It was, it was insane. The fans were going crazy and the whole cast was there which was the great… the best part, cause there’s only like one time where the cast is all together, I mean that was the premiere. That was great!

Tommy2: And how long has it been since you’ve seen them?

Willow Shields: Well, I mean I’ve seen certain people – Jen (Lawrence), Josh (Hutcherson), Liam (Hemsworth), Francis (Lawrence). I’ve seen them a lot lately for press, but seeing the whole cast like Sam (Clafin), Jenna (Malone), and Donald Sutherland, Lenny Kravitz… all of them, it’s been a long time.

Tommy2: Now why don’t you tell us about that beautiful floral print dress you wore and who you thought had the best look of the night.

Willow Shields: Thank you! Yeah, I went through like ten different dresses that I tried on so it kind of was a fairly easy dress choice for me and I thought it’d be great because not only was it really pretty and I loved it, but it did have roses on it and I thought for Primrose it’d kind of be perfect for the occasion.

Tommy2: Exactly! What look do you think was the best on the red carpet?

Willow Shields: Oh gosh! Well, Jen’s was amazing! I think that was just… like I feel like she can, you can see the differences, like she can pull off something very classy like she did at the Oscar’s, but then also pull off something very edgy like she did at the premiere, so… I love her sense of style and I loved that look.

Tommy2: And the guys were looking good as well.

Willow Shields: Yeah they were, they were looking really nice.

Tommy2: Was there a lot of energy in the theater that night?

Willow Shields: Yeah, there was! I mean, the fans, when they saw great moments in the film, everyone was clapping and cheering and when they first introduced different characters that they love, like Finnick, they were cheering, so it was really fun.

Tommy2: Oh, I love it when it’s like that in a movie theater. It’s almost like a big fight.

Willow Shields: Exactly!

Tommy2: So many people are looking forward to the new film, what can we expect to see in terms of the story line?

Willow Shields: Well Katniss and Peeta live in the Victory Village, now they are going back to The Hunger Games along with the past victors of the past Hunger Games. So President Snow is sending all of the past victors once again and there is this spark of the rebellion in this new movie and you start to see that and it’s kind of when you see that Katniss has sort of outsmarted the Capitol.

Tommy2: And will we be seeing more of Primrose?

Willow Shields: Yeah, a little bit more which is exciting. My character has grown up a little bit, she’s like her Mom and you kind of see this newfound bravery in Prim because she was so vulnerable in the first movie and after going through all of that she’s really there for Katniss now and you can see this new bravery inside of her.

Tommy2: So a little less crying?

Willow Shields: A little less crying, yes.

Tommy2: And without spoiling anything what was one scene in the film that just blew you away in terms of what you expected and what ended up on the screen?

Willow Shields: Well, it’s like very close to the book which I’m very happy with because I’m a big fan of the books and my favorite part about the whole movie was the new characters they were introduced, because there are some great new characters like Johanna Mason, Finnick, all these great new characters that they introduced. And then also my favorite part of the whole movie was the last scene, which is incredible and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.

Tommy2: And from your perspective, what was the biggest difference from shooting Catching Fire from the first movie?

Willow Shields: There wasn’t much of a difference except for that everyone was comfortable on set. So like the first movie it took a couple of days to a week for everyone gets to know each other and just be in a comfortable environment and just have fun on set. So this time around it was really easy to just, jump on set and have a blast

Tommy2: And did you get to travel to any fun locations to shoot your segments?

Willow Shields: I got to film in Atlanta which was really fun, but everyone else got to film in Hawaii and Atlanta so, that was a bit unfortunate, but oh well!

Tommy2: Maybe next time right?

Willow Shields: Maybe next time.

Tommy2: And whats your best memory from working on the film?

Willow Shields: I don’t know that I have a specific best memory, just hanging out with Jen on set was really fun and she’s such an incredible actress so being able to watch and learn from her while working with her is amazing.

Tommy2: And this past month you’ve also been traveling the country doing autograph signings for Seventeen magazine.

Willow Shields: Yes!

Tommy2: First off, what was you’re reaction like when you first saw yourself on the cover?

Willow Shields: Oh gosh, I was actually going on a hunt for it in Wal-Mart and when I finally found it, I was like, oh my god, this is crazy cause, you see, I’ve been getting Seventeen Magazine for like years and so it’s great being able to just see, it was insane though being able to see that. But yeah, all the fans are really sweet at these signings, so it was fun.

Tommy2: And out of all the things you’ve been able to do as a result of being part of the Hunger Games. What’s your favorite… like media appearances, special events, or just meeting people?

Willow Shields: I would say, well I love working on set with everyone but other than that I think possibly being at the premieres, just because it’s like the one chance that you get to showcase the movie you’re so proud of with the whole cast.

Tommy2: And with 2014 just around the corner what does your life look like. Will you be taking it easy or do you have any upcoming projects?

Willow Shields: Well, I’m about to start filming Mockingjay 1 and 2, back-to-back, so that will take up a little bit of my time and then probably just possibly working on another movie when Mockingjay is done filming.

Tommy2: For the first movie, you actually got to do a little bit of singing. Is that something you’d like to pursue at all in the future?

Willow Shields: I don’t think so. I like music, but I’m not exactly into singing.

Tommy2: Okay, out of all of the social networks, which you’re favorite to stay in touch with fans. Do you prefer Twitter or Facebook or Instagram?

Willow Shields: Instagram definitely! That’s my favorite by far, yeah.

Tommy2: One thing that tends to come up often about you is that you’re really big in supporting charities. What are some of the causes you’ve enjoyed working with?

Willow Shields: My favorite is operation smile and they help to do operations for kids with cleft lips. So that’s my favorite, and other than that, that’s my favorite. And I do a lot of charity work on my own at home going to homeless shelters and the Humane Society and things like that.

Tommy2: Alright, well thanks so much for taking time out of your schedule to talk with us today about The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, in theaters now. You take care now.

Willow Shields: Thank you.
