Interview: Adam Hicks – Lemonade Mouth

Tommy2: Hey it’s Tommy2 and I hope everyone is doing great – today we’re joined by Adam Hicks who stars in Disney XD’s Zeke & Luther in addition to Disney Channel’s hit movie, Lemonade Mouth. Adam how’s it goin’ man?

Adam Hicks: It’s great, what’s up man. How are ya?

Tommy2: Doing real good myself. Now let’s start off with the number 1 original cable movie of 2011 to date – Lemonade Mouth. Are you surprised with how well it has been received?

Adam Hicks: Yes, it’s incredible! It’s such and awesome feeling, it’s like… you know, you expect it to do well but you never really know how well it will do, and just the responses from that fans and you know all of the great… I mean we got like 20 million views in a three day period which was incredible. And it, I mean it’s just the greatest feeling, it’s hard to even put into words really.

Tommy2: And I’m curious after you finished shooting the film, was it long before you had your next glass of Lemonade?

Adam Hicks: Yes! We drank so much lemonade. I mean there was… we were drinking lemonade constantly. And I remember every scene that… you know some people like lemonade, like Bridgit, she loves lemonade and Hayley, Hayley kind of… she doesn’t know if she really, I mean, you know I was a fan of lemonade. I kind of chilled out afterwards, took awhile before I had my first glass.

Tommy2: Of course, you shot that film last summer. What was it like getting back together with the cast for the recent promotional events.

Adam Hicks: It’s amazing, I mean like the cast is incredible. You know, Disney picking this group of musicians, like not a lot of people know that with Lemonade Mouth we’re a band on camera and off camera. Like performing as a band and singing with synergy and you know everyone coming together and how the compliments and accomplishments that we’ve made are just incredible. And you know we’re all best friends at the same time which makes it even better, so we’re always hanging out or whether its on set or off set. I mean they’re just great people, you know to work with you know, so many talented musicians and actors.

Tommy2: Now in addition to your acting in Lemonade Mouth, you played a pretty huge part behind the scenes with the soundtrack. How did this all come about?

Adam Hicks: I got to write for three songs in the movie. Breakthrough, Determinate, and Livin’ On A High Wire and it was amazing. Actually when I was auditioning for the role, Disney contacted me and they, they were you know, we were talking… they wanted me to do music for the movie and I was still trying out for Wen so I was super excited. And then I booked Wen on top of if, you know the character Wen and got to put my acting into it also and it’s just amazing to combine my two like ultimate passions into one project and make it this colossal, this revolution which is you know what we’re trying to start.

Tommy2: And to put you on a spot how about doing a little freestyle rap about your interview right now with Tommy2?

Adam Hicks: Yo! You know how we do, chillin’ with Tommy2
We don’t mess around and we let it out, Lemonade Mouth
Check the TV at your house, it’s coming out my mouth
Live feel the vibe, I’m chilling to night
and I hope everyone out there is feeling alright.

Tommy2: Awesome man… nothing like an exclusive. Now, that soundtrack not only had a top ten debut, but weeks later it’s still in the top 20. In my opinion it’s one of the stronger Disney Channel soundtracks since the High School Musical days, yet at the same time I think what you were talking about earlier with the casting had a lot to do with it as well.

Adam Hicks: Yeah, definitely. This cast, like we are all musicians, like the singing that is on the tracks, like the real…. real singing, the real rapping, you know writing and just this awesome lik vibe for Disney. I feel like a new kind of leaf for Disney you know. And just as far as being compared to High School Musical that’s a blessing cause High School Musical was showing people and did amazing and all the fans all remember, you know being part, you know going through the High School Musical and everything. And being compared to that is amazing, at the same time I feel that Lemonade Mouth is it’s own you it’s own… I guess revolution. I guess I could say and you know it’s like it’s a storyline that involves music instead of a musical and it’s like, but at the same time it like this kind of music that Disney has put into this project is a completely new type of music. Like you know different styles, different vibes it’s just I feel like new leaf that the fans are responding great to, cause you never really know.

Tommy2: Yeah, I think the tie in between the lyrics and the characters was perfect.

Adam Hicks: Yeah… like, yeah just how you know this… you know when I first read the script, like when I first read the script, like it was crazy how a movie could have so many morals, so many meanings and have so much depth in a script, you know. It goes into every characters life, you know by the end of the movie you really feel like you really know Lemonade Mouth. You know they’re whole life, you know their music life, you know their school life. And you know at the same time the underdogs rising to the top, you know going through school and seeing you know the school politics and everything of how school works, and you know not being heard and understanding that and throwing all these in and having the music kind of follow it also, you know as far as the morals and the understandings of that. Which I felt like was great just as a message.

Tommy2: Yeah and most importantly you can believe in the characters.

Adam Hicks: Right exactly… yeah, exactly.

Tommy2: And one other comparison with High School Musical there is the one question that keeps coming up with… and especially with all of the natural talent in the cast is – will you all ever have the time in your schedules to go out on tour?

Adam Hicks: Oh please man, please… let it be man. Cause would love that, like I know everyone in Lemonade Mouth would love to go on tour. We’re actually going on The View in a couple days from now – Monday I leave to go on The View and we went on Good Morning America to perform live and so hopefully man, hopefully, fingers crossed – I’m trying to keep the revolution going. It’s really up to the fans and their responses have been amazing so far, I don’t know why not.
