Old School meets the New School. Selena Gomez has a new video on YouTube with ‘the band’ singing the Backstreet Boys 1999 chart topping single, I Want It That Way. Absolutely love it!

And for those of you that thought boy bands were done… check out this recent picture of Big Time Rush. Hmm… like Selena Gomez isn’t the only one inspired by the Backstreet Boys.

Ashlyne Huff

January 27th, 2011

Tommy2: Hey it’s Tommy2 and tonight we’re at The W in Minneapolis hangin’ out with Ashlyne Huff, who’s had a busy day doing some radio promo. How ya doin’?

Ashlyne Huff: I’m great, thank you.

Tommy2: Great, now earlier this month you released a brand new single by the name of White Flag. How has the response been so far?

Ashlyne Huff: So far everybody’s had pretty good feedback. I’ve been very luck and very fortunate to hear a lot of good things and people have bringing White Flag’s to the stations that I’ve gone to and I heard it on the radio for the first time. That was in Baltimore, they played it for me why I was sitting there and that was surreal. My sister called me yesterday from Knoxville saying she heard it on the radio there and, so I’m happy, I’m happy.

Tommy2: And currently you’re out on the road visiting radio promoting it. For someone that’s not familiar with that aspect of the business, why don’t you describe what a day is like when you’re doing the radio promo tour?

Ashlyne Huff: Every single day of my life is completely different from the day before, that is a rule of thumb of figuring out. But for the most part with radio involved we go to wake up in the morning… feeling like P. Diddy… that’s from where that was headed. Sorry! You wake up in the morning and I get ready to go, downstairs lobby call, we go straight to a station and like today, I had a meeting with the Program Director and we all chatted around and did like the business side of stuff. But then I went to another station and I performed for some of the people, did liners that you hear here and there. Made up my own liners today which is always interesting, and then jumped on a plane go to another city do the same thing all in one day. And then go to dinner with some people from the station and then go to the hotel, and then talk to Tommy2. That’s a typical day in my life. So every day is different, sometimes we drive, sometimes we fly, sometimes we do a lot of stations in one place. So it just depends on where we are really.

Tommy2: And sometimes you get confused what city you’re in…

Ashlyne Huff: Umm… yes! Always know it’s just my typing skills that don’t catch up with my brain.

Tommy2: Okay… White Flag has more of a dance feel to it than your self-titled EP, is that the direction you’re headed with your upcoming full length release.

Ashlyne Huff: Yes! Everything on this new record is, and it’s called Let It Out for a reason. Just, like be yourself, do what you want to do and figure out what that is to begin with. So I’m confident that I’m a dancer and so when I perform I want to be able to dance, I want to get out there and move like I did like way before I even started singing. So this new record reflects that.

Tommy2: Last year you spent a lot of time out on the road with acts like Jordin Sparks and Honor Society. What did you learn about yourself during that time?

Ashlyne Huff: Well I learned that one, I love this, I can do this, and it’s really fun to be out with different people. I also learned that I got really lucky to be out with those two people. They’re two great acts that treated me like, like royalty and they didn’t have, they didn’t have to do that and I definitely have great friends out of it. I’m actually playing with Jordin and Honor Society next week at Jordin’s Superbowl charity event, so I’m really excited to have a little reunion of sorts. And I also learned that my growing up as a “regular kid” was helpful because I didn’t, I didn’t leave who I was when I started. Which is nice and no one asked me to of course, but being on the road for that long you could, it can eventually, you can start to like forget where you came from and I had no desire to, which was nice. I’m happy about that.

Tommy2: Now in addition to all your shows, last year you got to sing the National Anthem at quite a few special events. Are those fun, or a little nerve wracking?

Ashlyne Huff: At first… what’s nerve wracking about it is the good kind of nervousness that you always, to me, for me that I should always feel if I care about what I’m doing. And to sing our Nation’s Anthem, that is very very sacred and important and it’s an honor above everything else, so if I’m never worried about it, then I feel like there are some problems because to just flippantly… singing my song is like one thing because like I can you know move with, you can’t mess up the Anthem you know? So, it’s very important to me and it’s an honor cause I was the only one chosen to do that one day and I’m representing that part of the game so I take it very seriously and it will always be nerve wracking in the best way possible.

Tommy2: And to add to the nerves at one of those games you actually had not only to sing the National Anthem but you had to sing…

Ashlyne Huff: The Canadian National Anthem – Oh Canada! Which is… really, I like the song, it was actually cool, but I sang it right before ours and I thought please don’t let me ruin’ ours. You know because I’m thinking about two different nations.

Tommy2: Now getting back to your album, Let It Out. Is there anything you can, any hints you can give us towards it like a song… or anything like that?

Ashlyne Huff: Yeah, definitely. We wrote this one a little differently than the last one. Most of the time you write a record like over time you kind of gather things here and there but for this particular record I went in with Evan Bogart and his team of writers and Evan was one of the writers on S.O.S. for Rihanna and Halo for Beyonce, so we went in and I knew what I wanted. I wanted it to be upbeat, fun, dance music and we got it done in six days. So we wrote all the songs in six days which was difficult for the, for the sleeping but it was worth it and I’m very happy with it. So the record, one thing we’ll say is that the title track is my baby. It’s my favorite, it was the one that I knew from the get go that I was gonna love because it’s for all of those cheerleaders and dancers out there. And I know there are a ton more than there ever have been before but, it’s got this, it’s like London Bridge meets Milkshake meets Hollaback Girl and it’s totally not just dance music. It’s like fun, hip-hop with pop infused so it’s my favorite. It’s the last one on the record, it’s the title and what it means to me is what I said earlier… letting things go, letting go of who you thought you were because you were trying to censor yourself. For whatever reason people just don’t show themselves all time and now this is the record where I let it all go and I actually show, the girl that danced in front of the mirror in her house and that danced in front of the microwave so… this is it.

Tommy2: And if front of the mirror now you’ll be dancing on stage…

Ashlyne Huff: In front of people! Which is funny because I’m a dancer and I always danced in front of people. But I danced differently when I was in my own room. I dance with reckless abandon and I was so polished and perfect on stage. So now I want to bring both of them together.

Tommy2: Alright, well we’ll definitely be looking forward to it…

Ashlyne Huff: You better… just kidding!

Tommy2: You know I’m a huge fan of your self-titled release, right you know that…

Ashlyne Huff: Yes, I know this. We go back a long way.

Tommy2: Alright well thanks so much for your time today Ashlyne.

Ashlyne Huff: Thank you, thank you.
